The Best Vocal Warm-up for Singers

Are you a singer looking for an easy, yet effective vocal warm-up?

Try out Liana’s 4 step vocal warm-up method.

The 4 Step VOCAL WARM-UP METHOD for singers

In this video, our CEO, Liana, walks you through her signature 4 step vocal warm-up exercise meant to help singers get prepared to sing a wide vocal range, or dive into a challenging piece.

STEP 1 - START WITH A VOCAL BUZZ

Start with a lip trill and try it out in different ranges. Go as high or low as you want. You can do this exercise accompanied by descending or ascending piano chords. You’ll be able to start warming up your voice without having to actually sing. This step helps get your vocal cords going without judgment.

STEP 2 - BUILDING THE TONE YOU WANT TO HEAR

Choose a neutral vowel like ‘i’ or ‘u' and sing it out like a siren. Play around with it to achieve the tone you want. An ‘i’ sound is especially helpful for achieving a forward, resonant, and bright tone while an ‘u’ sound is great for a light and floaty head voice. If you notice your tone changes throughout the exercise, start over. This step helps build tone and stay consistent with it throughout a wide range.

STEP 3 - EMBODY FREEDOM

Try to combine bouncy and lively exercises with physical movement (think moving your arms) to help you feel a sense of freedom. If you still feel tension, locate the tension, and try to create movement in that area to loosen it up like moving your head around. This step helps you achieve a looser free sounding voice that improves tone and resonance.
