Anyone can sing. Here’s how.

In this video, My Music Match vocal teacher, Nicolle, walks you through how singing is something you are capable of even if you’re unsure how to go about it. She goes through basic foundational exercises and gives tips to help you get started.

We sing our way through life

You’ve always been singing your way through life. This isn’t about learning how to sing, but about getting back to the basics. As we grow up, we sing in many ways that might not be so obvious. From telling stories to speaking in general, it’s all considered singing.

Retrain your singing voice through speech

We need to unlearn the bad habits we’ve picked up over time. Exercise your voice and use the muscles in your vocal cords to speak properly. This helps create a solid foundation for you to sing in a healthy and sustainable way. A vocal fry can be cute, but it’s actually pretty bad for our vocal cords.

Visualize your sound

Your voice is a mini version of you. Visualize your voice in whichever way is helpful to you. Nicolle visualizes her voice as a mini version of her. She visualizes her sound coming from deep within using her breath to propel the sound forward and create a resonant and bright tone. Use your belly as a balloon to allow the sound to flow with ease.

Step into fearlessness

It’s true. Anyone can sing, but fear can get in the way. Maybe it’s the fear of being judged. Channel that part of you deep in your core that embodies a sense of courage, so you can feel free to sing. Think about the moments or places in the day when you randomly start singing. The next time you catch yourself singing, or feel the urge to sing, take a deep breath, go with it, and let it flow.
