breathing to effectively support your singing voice

Throughout Part 1 of this video, you will learn all of the mechanics of breathing to sing in a simple and interactive way. Be sure to check out Part 2, which consists entirely of guided exercises so you can apply what you learned!

Proper Posture

Stand with your shoulders back and down and arms relaxed at your side. Proper posture is the essential starting point for taking breaths that will support your sound.

Body mapping

As you are breathing, be sure to connect your focused mind with the actions of your body. Feeling connected to the way your body is moving and feeling will allow you to explore breathing techniques with ease.

lungs + Diaphragm

Your ribs are designed to move with the expansion of your lungs. As you breathe in and your lungs expand, your ribs will move slightly. However, be sure that you don’t have exaggerated movement in your stomach or shoulders.

The lungs work in direct relation to the diaphragm when you breathe. Sierra will guide you to find your very own pancake-shaped organ and explain it’s function. The diaphragm creates a vacuum effect in your body by contracting downwards when you breathe in.

Since your diaphragm helps your lungs to breathe, it is important to be aware of what it feels like to manipulate the speed at which your diaphragm contracts and relaxes. When singing, you want to slow the relaxation rate of your diaphragm as you use your exhale to produce pitch.
